Is Sexual Orientation Fixed at Birth?
Drs. John M. Bailey and Richard Pillard's, “A Genetic Study of Male Sexual Orientation,” reported in the Archives of General Psychiatry, December, 1991, studied the prevalence of homosexuality among twins and adopted brothers.

Identical twins have the same genetic make-up. The Bailey-Pillard study found that only about 50% of the identical twins were homosexual; we can easily conclude that genetics does not play a major part in their sexual orientation.

Bailey, J. M., Dunne, M. P., & Martin, N. Genetic and environmental influences on sexual orientation and its correlates in an Australian twin sample. Journal of Personality & Social Psychology. 78, 524-536, (2000)

Dr. Bailey found a 20% concordance for gay males and a 24% concordance for lesbians. “And so in a group of 100 homosexual men who have an identical twin, 20 of those twins will have an identical twin who is also homosexual and 80 will have a twin who is heterosexual. These pairs share the same genetics but they are quite discordant on the trait of sexual orientation, thus suggesting an environmental component in the development of sexual feelings and identity. It is important to note that these identical twins were reared together.”
