Spring 2007 Pilot Program and Results

The new curriculum was piloted in March in three middle schools (Argyle, Julius West, and Westland) at the 8th grade and three high schools (Sherwood, Watkins Mill, and Bethesda-Chevy Chase) at the 10th grade. About 200 students in each grade were selected to pilot the curriculum. Even though the opt-out rate was almost ten times the opt-out rate for previous years, MCPS is implementing this curriculum in all of the counties schools this fall. Note, during the pilot, the county sent out permission slips with no place to check opt-out, and then claimed to the media that “4% of the parents opted out, and 5% of the parents did not return their permission slips”. But, the only opt-outs they counted were parents who had handwritten on the permission slip, “opt-out”. A bit disingenuous...
